  • Cork was only stained about 12mm and had heavy crystals. Wine was cloudy light-to-medium orange-tinted garnet with slight sediment. On the nose, it's predominantly prunes, sour cherry, menthol, butterscotch, and a bit of funk/earth. On the palate, medium-full body of sour cherry, dried cranberry, violet, cola, green peppercorn, eucalyptus, bell pepper, and grape tomato. There's a slight sweet, zest flavor as well. Medium finish with good structure. Much richer on the second night. Rating: 92.5

  • Decanted 90 minutes before serving. All I can say is "wow." Beautifully expressive bouquet of blackberries, black cherries, chocolate, leather, violets, and cedar. There's a gamey element to the wine, which is accompanied by dark black smoke. The palate still shows beautiful, almost creamy fruit, with hints of vanilla and licorice. This wine is in perfect balance and has a number of years to go. A pleasure to drink. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

  • Vini Rossi-L'Ultimo Piano (Asti Trattoria): Reminds of the 1990 Beausejour-Duffau, as in "where did this wine come from?" I've had half a dozen bottles of this wine over the years and it always has drunk well, surpassed expectations, and raised the "what is it" question among drinkers, with the answer simple: a great vintage and good timing in the field. This was the favorite wine of most of this flight's tasters. It had a floral, violet nose, good acidity, structure, and back-palate, with an excellent finish. Some thought it feminine, describing it as elegant, aromatic, earth. Licorice flavors were noted, as well as raspberry, grilled meat, smoke. "Mellow," with good depth and noticeable balance, it probably won't get any better than now. And how.....

  • Smells of tomato, leather and oak with cherry fruit behind it all. Bright cherry fruit on the palate integrated with the oak which turns it slightly creamy. Sour cherry, still holding strong structure, the tannins are present and the acidity is strong. That said, this was pretty boring on the palate, the flavors are really just light fruit, not much else going on, no earth, only light leather.
