  • Along with 1955, 1982 is my favourite vintage for Chateau Talbot. A Glorious wine. So I had high hopes for their second string even at nearly 40 years old. The colour was deep and the nose was appealing but I fear the fruit was a bit dilute and as is often the case with second wines, even in great years, they come out as 2/3 of a wine without the depth, concentration or complexity you would hope for. A bit underwhelming and you can't help thinking there were probably quite a lot of young vines contributing to the mix.

  • Excellent vin parfumé, d'un beau rubis à peine orangé sur le bord, pas fatigué du tout, très présent, persistant, aussi bon que certains Talbot de millésimes moins courus. Vraiment très bon...

  • Given the exalted status of the grand vin from this vintage, I was interested to see how well this second wine would perform, especially after receiving an email from the Chateau advising that the Connetable would certainly turn out 'fatigué'. Fortunately these bottles were in impeccable condition and the wine turned out to be as lovely and gentle as you could wish a mature St. Julien to be. Sweet, ripe dark fruits dominate the palate which has a silky but classically restrained style. Fruit fades to cedar and graphite before smooth tannins make their presence felt on the surprisingly long finish. An unlikely victory for fruit over evolution considering its 30 years, this is a super wine which could possibly go for a while yet but is fantastic for drinking now.
