  • Second wine of fourth growth Ch. Talbot. 2nd bottle of 6 purchased for $15 (!) each 5 years ago. Unbelievable quality for the price. Classic St. Julien. Oak seamlessly integrated. Just beginning to show some bottle age. Slight shift in color from a youthful purple to a more mature brick red. Emerging hints of cedar and truffle on the nose. On the palate plenty of ripe fruit - red currant and cherry. Lively acidity, lovely texture & weight. Fine tannins. Two questions arise... (1) why should I spend hundreds of dollars per bottle on first or second growths when I can drink this? and (2) why didn't I buy several cases when I had the chance?

  • I love wines from St. Julien and this wine did not disappoint. In fact I am kicking myself b/c I only purchased two bottles. The wine had good backbone and structure but it was also silky smooth towards the finish. The second wines get a bad rap but I have had some great bottles of second wines from St. Julien (Lagrange and Gruaud Larose). This wine could probably age for another 3 to 4 years but why hold on when it tastes this good. I paid $15 for it at K&L. I like the 04 Reignac as well (similar price), but I think the Connetable de Talbot is superior.

  • This one came by recommendation of a fellow CT member (RR), and I couldn't pass on the potential QPR. I got a heavy does of french oak and primary plum-cranberry fruits on first pour, and now I'm writing my "formal" TN about 30-minutes later, the bottle having been open for the duration. Off the bouquet, my nose picks up suggestions of wet, crushed granite and a shrubby bell pepper Cabernet scent, though I don't know the true varietal ratios of this wine. Fruits having mellowed somewhat since opening now appear as funky loganberry and steamed broccoli florets; slightly sweet and green like a bunch of fresh daffodils sprinkled with cracked green peppercorn flakes. On the palate, there's a balanced medium-bodied entry, at first a touch green and bitter, which builds in flavor, intensity, and sweetness as it leads to a well-defined, focused finish of crushed flowers and dried red fruits. Micro-impressions of sour cranberry and sour cream show up in the middle, adding to the complexity. Dry, fine tannins reserve the background. I have a sense this wine would be drinking better now had it been decanted. The chlorophyll components (like raw green tea) are tad much for me, but let's see if the fruit develops some and the bush leaves diminish over the next day or two.

  • Upon opening this had a really confected nose that made me think this might end up down the sink. After about an hour thankfully this was gone and there was some beautiful funk in its place. This blew away as well leaving gorgeous ripe red fruit on both the nose and palate. This had a creamy mouthfeel and medium length finish. I thought this was an exceptional wine that way over performed for its price. I don't see any rush to drink up yet, hopefully I can find some more.

  • At first pop this showed a lot of mushroom and earth notes mixed with some dark berry notes. Initially, tightly wound up on the palate but with some airtime it really mellowed out nicely and the wine left over for the second day (about half the bottle) was even better as it smoothed out quite nicely on the palate. A surprisingly fantastic bottle for $16.
