First totally closed and monolithic, needed two hours to open: then red fruit, some cassis, flinty, stony and saline. Mouth coating, dense and with impeccable length. A typical 2012 Côte de Nuits with its concentrated freshness, but not yet fully open. A good decant will help or better a longer cellar snooze.

Maturing color-red center, light garnet outer third. Very smoky at first but this fades into the background over an hour or so. Then blackberry confiture. Medium weight. For a moment, a tannic wall, but it gets going quickly with air, showing a much sexier feel, soft earth, real sap, superb acidity, and a moderately tannic finish shot through with ground coffee notes. The tannins reassert themselves after about 90 minutes and I thought the wine was closed for good, but then more candied fruit came to the fore. Delicious, exceedingly complex, and not nearly at peak despite the color. Already outstanding, it could turn into something special over time.

Recently bought some more Clavelier wines so decided I should try some of what I have to make sure I like it; initially this showed very ripe dark fruits with some floral and spice notes, hints of tea and mineral. The palate felt a little flat and while it was good, it wasn't quite what I was looking for. I let it sit for about 90 minutes and thankfully it opened nicely and gained freshness and delineation that was lacking. The nose became a bit more red fruited with more minerality and the palate gained an extra dimension that made it much more enjoyable. There is still plenty of density of fruit and some tannic structure. Based on this performance I'd say hold for a while yet or at least decant significantly.

An elegant and reticent cool nose is followed by ripe blue and red fruits minerally driven flavors, there is good density and intensity of flavors that ends in a very long flinty finale that dries and coats the mouth. This is a good companion for a soft and fat dish, a dish with a thick and fat reduction to offset the chalky dry persistence. This is a very fine lip smacking flint candy though(if that exists) with very fine tannins and sleek fruit over active flintstone. On day two it shows more blackfruit, a good sign for keeping this in the cellar for five more years. This uphill terroir delivers minerally intense and racy wines- A statuesque kind of wine -not far from Musigny in style, just a bit leaner. I tend to prefer this uphill terroir in warm to very warm vintages as it will always yield more hedonistic flesh.

Took 2 hours to open up super closed down at first. Once it got the necessary air pure red fruited nose and the palate is dense and compact but has silky texture. Will age for some time.
