  • Dîner After Talich Quartet Concert and Mugneret-Gibourg/ Montille Masterclass (1243 Bourgogne Society - Beaune): Small glass, brief note. Black fruits with meaty character and lots of power. Slightly flashy aromas, then less flash and lots of substance and concentration on the palate. Very good length. Gevrey comes through very nicely here, with the Leroy style playing a perfect supporting role.

  • Beautiful nose of spice, earth, minerals and touch of meat. This carried through to the palate with the addition of red fruit and floral notes. This did not have the usual Leroy fireworks and carried a very pleasant rusticity to it. In this case the firmness of the 95s balanced very well with the Leroy style. Very very nice.

  • Casual Burg Dinner with Friends (The Bristol - Chicago IL): Open 30 minutes before serving. While I'm often a fan of Leroy wine, this wine was really shining in some unusual ways. This started like all the finest Leroy wines with intense spice and floral character, but perhaps more black fruit vs red. Flavors were intensely black cherry and berry with very clear Gevrey-Chambertin meatiness. also showing lots of 1995 structure throughout, but without the coarse elements too prevalent from the all-too-common mediocre wines from the vintage. So my favorite aspect of this wine was its showcasing the best of its terroir and vintage while still in the Leroy style. This remained quite consistent through the 2+ hours in glass.

  • Another young tight wine. At first it only gave up earth filled mushroom but as time grew on the tart red fruit started to appear on the nose and really add a nice ripeness to it. The wine was slightly uneven with juicy tart fruit that made me salavate but it felt like part of the palate was sectioned off with a touch too much astringent acid with growing tannins as the night went on. I'm hoping it all comes together cause if it does it'll be a really pretty wine. Doesn't have the power and structure of the 97 but maybe it will over time?
