  • Difficult pull of a cork that was only sodden at the proximal quarter.
Pale terracotta very much in the brown spectrum with no real hint of red.
Immediately soft, gentle and complex: tar, leather, antique furniture, burnt caramel, chocolate, vanilla, prune and walnut liqueur. A touch astringent.
I was worried this would fade fast but with fear and trepidation (it was early afternoon and this was intended for the evening) - 8 hours slow ox.
Subsequently a real increase in the depth and breadth of complexity, rose and sweet confection more prominent but also more baking spice, ginger, subtle liquorice, aniseed, all very soft, gentle, balanced and harmonious. A bit like a confectioner's dream. The acidity was simply singing. Altogether delicious.

  • An incredible wine of freshness, power and poise. It still has bright red fruits along with a myriad of savoury and earthy things. It is direct in the mouth with excellent clarity. There are engaging florals and notes of cedar, teak and truffle. Tannins have softened but are still supportive and it fans out on the finish and is remarkably persistent. One of the very best old Barolo I have had.

  • Marchesi di Barolo vertical from 2009-1951 (Merano Wine Festival): Another revelation coming after the 1958 - and the last wine to be tasted in this special series. This wine exhibited a fine espresso like nose and good sap on the mid palate, although with less exciting tension than the 1958. Still, an amazing wine for its age.
