Very pleasant and enticing nose; aromas of earth and berries. Wonderful flavors of plum, berries and earth tones. Slightly hard on the finish but otherwise a very good Barbera

Savoury, to be certain! Fruit notes were difficult to pick up in the nose, but savoury ones were present in spades. On the palate, the fruit emerged (especially the signature cherry flavours when I tasted on day 2!) and savoury notes developed further; spice, pepper, earth, pine among others. The mild tannins and notable acidity made for a very refreshing wine - an exceptionally pleasant wine to sip on. From the Alba area of Piedmont, the wine is side by side with stiff competition in Italian powerhouses Barolo and Barbaresco. However, in this case I think it holds its own. I can't say I've had a ton of experience with the Barbera grape, from what I do know I believe that this wine represents an excellent example!

Truffle Cheese Night (Extra Space): Tasted blind. Slow-ox in bottle. Drank over 3 hours. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of woody spice, vanilla, slight coconut, dark red cherries. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries, dark red cherries, earth, slight leather. With air, more plums and the oak integrates more, adding flavours of dark chocolate. Long finish. Very good quality Barbera. Serious stuff. Drink now with a decant or wait another 2 years for more integration. I just can't figure out why there seems to be quite a bit of oak influence here, although Cogno's website states that the wine is made in stainless steel, and aged 12 months in large Slavonian oak barrels. Apparently new large casks?

Popped and poured. Dark purple core, pink rim. A lovely Barbera displaying hints of black cherries, floral perfume, liquorish, spices, sea spray and vanilla-toffee on both nose and palate. Rich, concentrated and firmly structured. Darker, denser and packing more of a punch than what I have come to expect from this varietal (fortunately without loosing its sense of place). Slightly pricy at just over $40 – even so, I would consider buying more. Drink 2015-2018.

Fine, but a little restrained on the nose. Good ripeness of fruit, well balanced, round tannins, fresh. Drink or hold. 90-92
