  • Popped and poured this late in the evening after a 2016 Lynch Bages and an Hourglass. Following the Hourglass (extracted, fruit-forward) made the Petrus seem like a 99% cacao chocolate bar that follows a milk chocolate bar. The Petrus was dense, earthy, very light on fruit, and seemingly begging to be given another two decades to develop tertiary flavors. I certainly enjoyed it now but think it's a shadow of its potential today. Give it decades if you want your money's worth.

  • Pétrus dinner (Restaurant Sinck, Amsterdam, NL): Opened at the last minute to make up for the faulty 2005. Even taking the different treatment into account, the difference with the more delicate and open 2012 is striking. Precise, pure, linear, spices and mint, straight as an arrow, flawless typicity, quite closed, great precision and drive, needs time. Score potential in the 95-97 range.

  • Decanted and had one glass for an hour

Medium ruby colour, strawberry, red plum, violet, at first no black fruit to be found, white flowers, jasmin, cassis after half an hour approach became more deep and black fruit appeared. Fresh calcaire minerality came up and I had my first sip. Velvety structure, very good concentration but lighter than I expected from trying Petrus for the first time. Wine was vivid, bright and alive with a touch of volatility even. Finish gave me more sweet black cherry, blackberry, shy potpourri and a touch of Jodium.

Hopefully one day I'll get back to this wine but in 20 years time

  • The color of red gems with the quintessence of black raspberry, tiny French lilies, cocoa bean, pink peppercorn and charcoal, this wine is all about the finesse and sublime purity found in the fruit. The silky, sweet cherries in the end note remained etched in the finish. Produced from 100% Merlot, the wine reached 14.5% with pH 3.6. 95-96 Pts
