  • Just not opening up. It's alcoholic and "hot" (as someone in Cellartracker referred to it). Even smells a little like industrial cleaner amidst the fruit.

  • Still a big, alcoholic Zin, with a little too much astringency on the nose and tongue. I would have thought this wine would be tame after 6 yrs in the bottle, but I can't tell if it will improve with age or if it's just too acidic even at what might be its peak. I would recommend drinking this one with food (we had without food). I have 4 more bottles, so time will tell.

  • WOW!..This our last of a case we bought as futures, after earning our "best of show" at the '06 Healdsburg Barrel Tasting. By far, the best of the lot. Out of barrel (4 yrs ago), this wine was amazingly huge but lush and approachable. (I've always loved barrel samples but have never succeeded in talking a producer into letting me bottle some up to take away. The remaining option was to purchase the futures and gladly so.) Problem arose when we took delivery (~5 months later) and were so impatient, we opened a few bottles the first night...to marked disappointment, as the wine had turned flabby. The subsequent bottles continued along the same line; with the last couple (over a year ago), almost port-like in character. Huge BUMMER! It was therefore, with great trepidation that I opened this final bottle though, did so for a friend who fancies Zins (very unlike me, of late). To reiterate, WOW! It must have been a combination of that almost overbearing fruit component, though now melding impeccably with, what I until now hadn't identified as full, sweet tannins and just enough acidity (which itself likely lent to the sappy/jammy taste, early on) to evolve into a really solid Zin of huge proportions and impressive quality & structure. This would clearly be an exception to RP's rule that Zins rarely improve with time and so, should be drunk in their exuberant youth. A completely different and pleasantly perfect Zin...after 4 years in the bottle!

  • strong nose of blackberries and vanilla leading to a relatively chalky, tobacco, big fruit taste. should last 2-3 more years.
