Sommelier Journal

(Mauritson Estate Zinfandel Rockpile Ridge) Rockpile-sourced Zins will often fool you, coming across as tight and restrained on the nose, then turning around and smacking you with layers of thick, lively fruit. Here, once you get past a modest, peppery raspberry-black-cherry concentration in the nose and a stony wall of tannin at the front end, the fruit unfolds in the middle with an elegant yet gushy feel, punching through the palate, spreading out, and finishing with big, bright, velvety, almost sweet sensations. This field blend is co-fermented with 7% Petite Sirah. Appellation: Rockpile

(Rockpile Zinfandel Rockpile Ridge Vineyard, Rockpile) The Mauritsons have been farming in Dry Creek County and surrounding areas since 1868, but for more than a century, they sold most of their grapes to some of the top Zinfandel producers in the United States. Clay Mauritson, the sixth generation, felt the time was finally right to put the family name on a bottle in 1998. In the rugged, recently approved Rockpile American Viticultural Area, the Mauritsons hold 34 acres, a majority planted to Zinfandel, along with some Petite Sirah, Touriga Nacional, and Syrah. This example is a powerful, juicy, earth-driven style of Zinfandel offering flavors of juicy red berries, black pepper, vanilla, and soft, supple tannins. It could definitely benefit from decanting.
