Starting to show just a slight amount brick color. Lovely aroma of red fruit, very classic Zin. Taste starts with a nice dose of red fruit followed by a dose of tartness and finishing with mild pepper notes. This wine has aged gracefully. A pleasure to drink with many years of life still to be had.

At 11 years old, really good elegant field blend Zin. Inky purple. Black fruits, cinnamon, sage and chocolate. Rich sweet black and blue fruit with powdery tannins. The richness borders on port/raisony juice. At about $30 a bottle, this is very impressive and is doing great with some age.

Color: Inky purple. Nose: Black fruits, raisins and chocolate. Palate: Viscous with powdery tannins. Again the dark fruit, sweet fruit with the suggestion of sage. The wine was not a show stopper but so good. Quitely pleased us through a long meal. An elegant profile for such a rich sweet zin.

Well balanced Zin with full body character. Aromas and flavors are harmonized with mildly tart dark fruits and an oddly pleasant cocoa element. This is not your fruit bomb Zin! Character and nuance are the name of this game. Big difference between first opened and 30 minutes later. Definitely worth the wait. Some sediment in the bottle so take care in pouring.

(Mauritson Estate Zinfandel Rockpile Ridge) Rockpile-sourced Zins will often fool you, coming across as tight and restrained on the nose, then turning around and smacking you with layers of thick, lively fruit. Here, once you get past a modest, peppery raspberry-black-cherry concentration in the nose and a stony wall of tannin at the front end, the fruit unfolds in the middle with an elegant yet gushy feel, punching through the palate, spreading out, and finishing with big, bright, velvety, almost sweet sensations. This field blend is co-fermented with 7% Petite Sirah. Appellation: Rockpile
(Rockpile Zinfandel Rockpile Ridge Vineyard, Rockpile) The Mauritsons have been farming in Dry Creek County and surrounding areas since 1868, but for more than a century, they sold most of their grapes to some of the top Zinfandel producers in the United States. Clay Mauritson, the sixth generation, felt the time was finally right to put the family name on a bottle in 1998. In the rugged, recently approved Rockpile American Viticultural Area, the Mauritsons hold 34 acres, a majority planted to Zinfandel, along with some Petite Sirah, Touriga Nacional, and Syrah. This example is a powerful, juicy, earth-driven style of Zinfandel offering flavors of juicy red berries, black pepper, vanilla, and soft, supple tannins. It could definitely benefit from decanting.
