  • Still very nice to drink. The nose is very good and very intense. Old Bordeaux style. Lighter on the palate . Red berries, cigar box and some forrest floor. Not on the same level as 1989 Kanonkop Paul Sauer or 1989 Kanokop Cabernet Sauvignon. Enjoy it now.

  • Dinner with Constantia Uitsig's energetic winemaker and vineyard manager Danna de Jongh at Rainer's and Reni's place. Rainer put this wine in the lineup for comparison with Constantia Uitsig's Red Horizon 2015.

13% ABV. Medium ruby colour. Red fruit, raspberry, strawberry, cucumber, meaty notes and a hint of eucalyptus, with lively acidity, fully resolved tannin and very good length. The wine kept evolving as it breathed in the glass. Medium-bodied and well-balanced, with good complexity and a good, smooth texture. The wine has aged very well and has not yet reached the end of its journey. A great bottle! Much fresher than the bottle I had about 18 months ago.

  • “G8 summit – Old New World” (blind), Wine 5: The wine had a medium ruby core and garnet edges. It had a mature and balsamic nose. On the palate, the wine showed red fruit and spice as well as vegetal and balsamic notes, with prominent acidity, fully resolved tannin and very good length. A good wine; only the acidity seemed out of balance. This bottle was more evolved than the prior wines in this tasting. Drink now.

  • Meerlust Rubicon Vertical with Hannes Myburgh (Handford Wines, London): Much lighter in colour than the rest, brownish tint on the rim. If a characteristic bottle of this wine then it is starting to fade away, light and drying out and with quite a few sharp edges. Felt much older than an 89 in our view and one should be approaching these sooner than later. 88

  • The most evolved in terms of colour and nose. Soft and a bit flabby, not much fruit left with acidity dominating, fine length. Based on this bottle definitely past its best.
