This was my favorite at a comparison 8 South African cabernet sauvignons or C-S blends and had matured into a wine that was more interesting than the other wines, sophisticated with black fruits and a fine austerity.

Anyone who thinks SA wine can’t go 20 years should try this bottle. Beautiful integration and equilibrium of constituents. Feels like it wants to stay at this plateau for a while. My last bottle of 3 of the 2004. Skinny clay edge on a crimson body. Lovely delicate nose of fruit cake, anise and blackcurrent. Excellent palate with lots of dark syrupy fruit. Outstanding. Perfect food wine. Mr Myberg continues to keep the flag flying. Vancouver 2020.

Bought from the winery back in the day, lots of memories of SA! Bricking to look at, served without decanting, silo it needed to open. Seen other users write it- but very Bordeaux in style rather than new world. It holds the 14% easily. Cigar box and a bit of old Lester on the nose. Tannins very restrained. Similar to the Mt Mary from the other week? Would say it’s peak drinking now, wouldn’t wait much longer.

Lunch at New Ubin. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Sediments towards end of bottle. Better and more expressive with air. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of chocolate, grilled bell peppers, tobacco, black plum, blackcurrant, blackberries, smoky earth - a little peat. Developed. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), resolved soft high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of blackberries, blackcurrant, ripe grilled bell peppers, gentle chocolate/cocoa, tobacco, smoky earth. Broad medium+ finish. Very good quality. The smoky earth and tobacco here are real nice. As close to Left Bank Bordeaux as you gonna get in South Africa already methinks. Feels classic indeed. Well aged and time to drink up while fruit is still much alive. Only the finish is a little clipped. 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc.

(Meerlust Rubicon) Very dark red violet color; pepper, herbaceous, smoky cassis, green olive nose; herbaceous, tart currant, pencil lead, olive palate with good structure; medium-plus finish 92+ pts. (63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc; poured blind and most guessed Left Bank Bordeaux, even better after 3+ hours in the glass)
