2004 QUPE HILLSIDE ESTATE BIEN NACIDO VINEYARDS SANTA MARIA VALLEY ROUSSANNE- magnum; metallic nose with caramel and butterscotch coming in and being delivered in a medium body with some depth layering that truly pleases with only the least amount of exploration; there`s a buttery component as well that adds to the mix; this is great Roussanne, demonstrating it can age gracefully.

some gentlemen brought this into the restaurant tonight for a tasting of rhone varietals made in california. While this was their least favorite it was mine. This was classic roussane to me. Stale beer smell, developed color, and bitter almond and honey on the palate with a whif of bacon. Tasted along side Barrel 27 "high on the hog" (which was the overwhelming favorite), Alban Roussane (which everyone thought was overoaked), and Tablas Creek Espirit de Beaucastel Blanc (which everyone found a touch hot). Of The four this was the oldest, most developed, and the least favorite with some downright hating it. I think it needed to warm and open. Damn good wine. Especially for free :)

Impressively earth-driven, with a lemony drive without any sharply citric acidity. Leesy but not overwhelmingly so. A nice style that's easy to drink but still captures one's interest.
