  • That old yellow wax- 1985 Raveneau Clos
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Prayed to the wine gods that the wine wasn’t corked. The color was a beautiful vibrant yellow straw with a hint of green. The moment I popped it, I took a sniff and it was filled with popcorny reduction.
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We poured small tastes and let the bottle open up.
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Wow did it. Creme brûlée, lemon, ocean spray, baked orchard fruit and a hint of baking spice mixed in with that reduction element. Just stick your nose in and inhale the incredible scent.
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The palate was rich and full of texture and power. Showed a decade younger than its vintage, the warm baked nuts just starting to come out. The salinity on the wine persisted strongly into a long lip smacking finish.

Absolutely wow level Chardonnay. Oldest Raveneau Clos anyone at the table has ever had.

  • Tasted blind, this wine has a deep yellow / light gold center and clear rims. The medium+ intensity nose showed candied lemon, acacia flower, honey, white stone, butterscotch, and a touch of oxidation.

In the mouth, this wine was very ripe with great acidity and length. It did not "bowl me over" with its weight, unlike the '86, but was more refined and subtle. It was very complex and multi-faceted.

While apparently this bottle had a very high fill, it was showing just a bit too much age for my taste as there was a hint of oxidation. It was certainly a great wine and absolutely pristine bottles may be stunning. However, I would look to drink this ASAP with a couple hours of air.

  • Wow and double wow. This is an outstanding Raveneau! Youthful straw color. Seashells on the nose, then honey, chestnuts and coconut on palate. What depth this wine has! Great texture, round, rich. Long, long on the finish. White wine of the night, besting 97 Lagiche Montrachet.
