  • Tasted this twice from different bottles over the last week, and it sums up what I do not like about the '03s, at least in Burgundy. Way too much over-ripe fruit and in-your-face alcohol. I have never had a desire to water down a Burgundy before this stuff. Some people do and will enjoy this wine; I did not.

  • Popper and consumed over the course of 2-3 hours while watching Michigan make a huge comeback over Wisconsin on Saturday (I tvo'ed the game as I was coaching one of my son's flag football game at the time [of note, 2nd grade, 2-0 and throwing a goose egg for two games on defense!! [sorry, couldn't resist - proud poppa/coach!}.

now, on to the wine. This, as was to be expected and I think is really true accross the board in '03, was a big, dark, rich wine. Very spicy nose (not quite Vosne, but very close), with dark cherry and fruit smells combining with the spice to give a very enticing nose.

Very big wine, but without some of the harshness that you can get from a young Corton wine. Very lush and dark with a hint of tart cherry to go with the spice in your mouth. Kept at about the same pace for the entire evening, with no real noticeable drop off (or increase) in quality. Mid-palate was powerful, with the finish being nice, but nothing extraordinary.

This was a very nice bottle of 03 Burgunday, typical and something that will be a nice drinker at 5-8/10 years old while waiting for the 99's, 02's and 05's to come together. (WS -88) but I would rate this 90-91 and $38.00, a pretty good qpr for Burgundy and something that I would choose over California or Oregon any day of the week.
