A great way to finish the red wines, this is a powerful Hermirage, with dark fruit notes of black cherry, blueberry, plum, and blackberry, smoke, graphite. A big wine, but will balanced across the board. Strong tannins will take some time. Long finish goes and goes.

Very dark ruby/purple colour. Nose of dark fruits, graphite, cassis, peppery notes. Medium/heavy bodied with beautiful dark fruits, delicious cassis and blackberry, infused with graphite and minerality, and a spicy, peppery finish. Very well balanced and deft use of oak. This has a long spicy tannic finish so needs lots of time, but a lovely wine. The cassis, minerality and graphite notes give it a bit of a Pauillac feel to this deep powerful Shiraz.

Wine Advocate Kings of Rhone Online Masterclass: Round and soft. Very fragrant. The bright fruit shines through the earthy meaty profile with tar and smoke. Noticeable tannins give it great structure. This is still a baby and will require another decade.

Kings of Rhone Masterclass (Casa Esperanza): Absolutely amazing. This was the pick of the Chapoutier wines on the tasting, perhaps the pick of all the wines amidst a very strong flight. I loved the nose here, with its subtle but beautiful notes of cassis and blueberries, earth and smoked meat, a seam of granitic mineral, and then a drift violets at the edges. Just lovely. The palate was still very, very young, but such was the quality on it that it just took my breadth away. There was such purity on the fruit - with a wonderfully transparent, almost Burgundian clarity in its cassis and blackberry expression on the attack; yet with all the density and muscle of the Rhone beneath that. On the midpalate, the wine showed really fine, firm, sculptural tannins and a wonderful seam of acidity that led it into an effortlessly long, fresh finish. Here, we had the cassis tones shading into brighter red fruit - think cherries and dark berries - then spice and earth, maybe a little savoury hint of black olives. With time and air, notes of dark chocolate, granite and smoke drifted out as well, all lingering on and on in the backpalate. Such a tremendous wine. A very different expression of Syrah than the Guigal La La's, or even the Ex Voto Ermitage - this was complete, noble, profound, yet so fresh and energetic. Already so very impressive now; this will be a showstopper when it hit its peak a couple of decades down the road.

Kings of Rhône: Kings of Rhône virtual masterclass moderated by WA‘s Joe Czerwinski featuring both Michel Chapoutier and Philippe Guigal who presented 5 wines each. Including shipping and storage, all wines spent approx. 1 week in a screw cap phial. In this direct face-off, Guigal had the upper hand claiming the top 3 wines: La Turque 2017 (98), La Mouline 2016 (97), Ex-Voto Blanc 2017 (96). Chapoutier's top wine was the Le Pavillon 2015 (95). Full list included in the tasting story.
Tasting note: This is like biting into a medium-rare fillet mignon grilled à point. Dark berry fruit, iodine, intense olive aromas and herbal dimensions. After a short while some sweeter layers of liquorish pop up. Softly textured despite plenty of depth with a quite long-lasting finish. A truly dark character overall. There was definitely not enough time to explore this in its entirety but I feel there is immense potential here.
