I agree with presterjohn. Quite a fruity and rich wine which had some definition but the heat of the vintage seems to be showing through. Nice wine but certainty not what I expected. To be fair, I've had some other 2003s which are really of the stewed fruit type. Some nice notes of earth and leather on the nose but seemed to fade as the bottle finished.

Cannot really score. Very closed, even after one hour. Opened briefly and showed some real classy dark fruit and earth overtones, only at the end of the bottle. Next time decant for 2 hours + or wait a couple more years...in it;s dumb phase methinks.

When a 2003 burg is opened, it's very hit or miss in my experience. This was tasted blindly, and I had it as a 2000 or 2001 Volnay 1er cru. It is not scorched or briary at all, considering the vintage, and is recognizably Volnay, with hints of canned corn on the palate alongside masculine flavors intermingling with feminine perfume. The finish is a bit clipped now, but I believe this wine has plenty of potential to go a few more years and become even more interesting. Excellent.
