Bienvenue a Champagne; 4/20/2023-4/29/2023 (Les Crayeres, various restaurants, Les Avises and a many wonderful producers): Quite possibly my wine of the trip. This was just awesome. There’s that age that comes with time and while this is by no means old it has a few more years on the wines than some others. A warmer vintage and perhaps not as much for long term aging and yet there’s something so classic about the styling and the structure and the overall impression. Hints of burnt caramel. I am not describing it well but this was just one of those wines that makes you sit up and take notice because it was so interesting. Had been opened the day before and was very well evolved. Lovely.

Dinner at Formento's with Ross (Chicago, IL): Disgorged December 2014, 2.5 g/L dosage. The riper vintage does so well with this sort of style of wine. A nice mix of bread, apples, and a hint of nuttiness, but balanced so well by its acidity. Moderately chalky on the palate with a coarser bead. I love the density on this; despite the sensation of heightened acidity, the ripe fruit balances this very well.

Excellent. Great energy and definition. Subtle yet complex and lingering. Still on the young side. First time with this bottling from Brochet.

Brief Takes on a Slew of Grower Champagnes (Arlequin Wine Merchant, San Francisco): Light weight, orange, and soil, but on the whole, very neutral impression.
