The '78 Brunate is an insanely beautiful wine, representing everything I could hope for out of an aged Rinaldi. Everything is dialed up to the max in this wine with maddening dark perfume, concentration, and acidity. The nose is dark and spicy, with balsamic and sweet spice notes, slightly dried/concentrated black fruit tones, menthol, minerality, and leather. On the palate, the '78 remains rich and concentrated and vibrant with sharp acidity. I found dark red fruit, menthol, iron, and sweet spices, and a long, sweet and salty finish of brown spice, balsamic, iron, and saline minerality. This is a wine that is quite tertiary with spice, iron, and saline notes being the most pronounced on the palate, but seemingly more so because of the style than it being too evolved, given the intensity that remains. I find similar iron and saline notes that I found recently in the '96, but have not found in more recent vintages of Rinaldi, which seem to be more fruit driven.

9 hours double-decanted. Mesmerizing energy and power for a wine of its age. A deep color (like other notes on larger format bottles), darkening further with air. Aside from cherry and clove, an atmospheric smell, strong but hard to pin down. A pungent taste of cherry and its pit, initially a little astringent but smoothing out as the texture turned to satin. The wine filled the mouth, puckering clove and mustard seed in addition to the fruit, and was more savory toward the end of the bottle.

Piedmont and Champagne - Round 2 (MG): Still young raspberry/cherry fruit with an impressive complexity. Packed with notes of sewer, rose petals and plenty of spices. Long and clean aftertaste that is persistent and intense. Extremely impressive wine!!!!

At the Festa Gala Dinner. From Mag brought by Jamie.
Stunning. Perfume coupled with power. Density without heaviness. Everything is in balance. At (maybe even early) peak dare I say. Wow. The most impressively awesome wine of the night. With the 58 Bartolo begin the most awesome intriguing wine of the night. 97

Gala Dinner at Antonio Galloni's La Festa del Barolo (Four Seasons Restaurant, NYC): A magnum brought by Jamie. Fragrant cherry nose. Expansive, tannic, tasty. Some sourness on the finish keeps it from being great.
