Community Tasting Notes (4) Avg Score: 92.3 points

  • A deep golden colour with a greenish tinge. The nose began to open in the glass over 30 mins+ as the wine warmed. The palate was dry but showed rich lemon flavours with hints of honey. Some grapefruit, lime, and citrus pith on the end palate. The initially forward acidity softened a little with time but remained on the long palate. A few hours later, the fresh, juicy, lip-smacking citrus fruit was accompanied by more lemon curd, honey, and delicate toffee notes with hints of clove. The palate remained remarkably long (with lime and lime zest flavours increasing).
It softened and improved with time and with food (roast chicken in a delicately spiced sauce).
This wine is new to me and is quite different from my normal South Australian Chardonnay (and has little in common with most French Chardonnay that I know). I would not have recognised the grape on first tasting. I’m sure my score (91+) will rise with time. I will try this again in 2 or 3 years.

I detected no reductive character (as described in some notes on the 2015 vintage).
I think wine of this quality demands more time in bottle before showing its best. The suggestion of 2017-2020 on CT is not reasonable to me. I have changed the end date to 2028 (but this is very conservative). Good Chardonnay needs time in bottle.
Sorry for the long note but the wine has changed and developed over 6h+ and I find it fascinating.

  • Comparable to Eileen Hardy, but better priced, this has lively acidity and very elegant body. 8 years on and it is exquisite. Have to see if I can find some. At waldhouse - sills.
