  • From 750ml. Pale tawny in colour. Medium acidity, light bodied, fine tannins. Burgundian like flavours. Soya, rose petals, some leather and a touch of dried red fruits (mainly cherries) in the background. Amazingly alive.

  • 12% alcohol.

Translucent, luminous Burgundy red color with some obvious developed maroon highlights. Somewhat restrained and slightly pruney nose with aromas of wizened dark berries and raisins, some floral notes of roses, a little bit of dried black cherries, light tobacco tones, a hint of tar and a touch of peppery spice. The wine is dry, medium-bodied and relatively ripe for a Carema on the palate with bright and lively flavors of ripe cranberries, tart lingonberries, some juicy dark fruits, a little bit of wizened dark fruits, light leathery tones, earthy hints of forest floor and a touch of pipe tobacco. The wine is enjoyably (but not excessively) high in acidity with moderately grippy medium-plus tannins. The finish is dry, long and grippy with intense flavors of chokeberries, fresh blackcurrants, some sour cherry bitterness, light pruney fruit tones, a hint of tart lingonberry and a touch of stony minerality.

A ripe yet crunchy and wonderfully balanced Carema with some obvious age - yet still the wine is far from starting to go downhill. Most likely the wine is at its plateau of maturity and - based on how long-lived the best vintages of Carema can be - it will be sitting there steadily for many years to come. For a wine at almost 50 years old, this is remarkably youthful in style. I doubt there is going to be much development in the future, but there still is no hurry whatsoever with it. Drink or keep. Recommended.

  • Translucent, luminous Burgundy red color with some obvious developed maroon highlights. Juicy, developed nose with complex aromas of ripe red cherry, some developed red fruit notes, a light touch of acetone volatility, a floral hint of rose petals, a touch of barnyard and a whiff of potpourri. The wine is medium-bodied, quite tannic and moderately high in acidity – meaning that it is a bit less acidic than Caremas on average. The lively flavors exhibit mainly surprisingly youthful red fruit flavors of sour cherry and ripe cranberry with underlying hints of sous-bois. Overall the wine feels very balanced: there is a crisp streak of acidity, yet the wine is still very smooth and pleasant. The wine finishes on a pretty long and quite tart note of sour cherries, acidic red berries and some stony minerality – although the developed flavors kick in towards the end of the aftertaste, introducing a slightly sweeter suggestion of wizened red fruit.

Overall the 1971 vintage of Carema was surprisingly enjoyable on its own; even though it sported high acidity, true to the region's style, it was slightly lower than in Caremas on average, making the wine feel quite balanced, even on its own – which is not always the case. Someone in the tasting described the wine pretty well as a "fillet knife in velvet". For a wine close to 45 years of age, this is remarkably youthful effort, only showing very slight signs of age. Most likely the wine has reached its plateau of maturity already some time ago, but it doesn't show any signs of giving up, so probably this can still keep for several decades more. I suppose there won't be much development, but it doesn't matter as the wine is drinking so nicely now.
