  • Loire Odyssey, Part II - the Reds (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): Our resident Loire expert, HM, was not too keen on this, but I really liked it actually. It was rather aggresive on the nose, with a bouquet that punched you with sweet spices, musk, lanolin, and then some dried longans, caramelised apples, some poached honeyed pears, preserved persimmons, all overlaid on a little stream of gasoline. Good stuff, really complex and expressive, but I liked it more when it had time to take on air and tone down a little rather than when it was first poured and came swinging out of the glass. The palate was even better I thought. Beautifully detailed, absolutely balanced, this had wonderfully delicious flavours of green mangoes, apples and pears, an underlayer of honey, a bit of sweet spice and a little sweet lemon lift at the long finish. I picked it out as a 1985 1er Trie given that it was somewhat thinner and showed less depth than one would expect from say 1989 or 1990, but there was such lovely sense of definition and elegance, and it was wonderful integrated, showing as one beautiful whole, all focused and pure from start to finish. Lovely stuff, and a real pleasure to end the meal off with, especially when paired with some delicious salted-egg-yolk and custard buns. Good now, but I can see it holding at this level for years and years to come.

  • 100% Chenin Blanc. During the first few minutes the nose is dominated by a very slight funk, vegetal notes and a subtle hint of olive oil. Within 5 minutes these former notes dissipate completely, being replaced by a rich minerality and graham cracker spices. In the mouth this wine displays great balance, good acidity and a good spicy sweetness with flavors of apricot, peach and citrus.

  • Musty Chenin nose with tropical fruits and earthy notes. Perhaps opened a bit too long with slightly dull flavors that turn more so on the finish despite a good acidic kick. Enjoyable, but not special.
