  • lighter style with some red fruit, but more savory notes of herb, straw and stone. Best on day one. No reason to hold these.

  • cork fell apart; medium body with concentrated almost extracted fruit on first taste; evolves in the glass; sweet and sour cherry, then mixed dark red berry, rhubarb, earth, some dried herb, black tea, reasonably integrated wood/sotto bosco; good length, acidity and typicity; might need to decant for sediment.

  • One off ($69.99) from the big box wine store about 6 months ago. Small taste, then about 2 hours of air, but fairly consistent notes on the nose and palate, led by strawberry, semi-sweet cherry, dry earth, minerality, garrigue, and lesser traditional BdM notes of tomato leaf, cedar and some dark florals. Medium purple with garnet notes, light to medium bodied and lighter legs. Medium- acidity and tannins, no heat. Medium+ complexity, medium intensity and persistence. I've had several vintages of the La Gerla normale, and not been super impressed, but this is the first riserva of theirs I've bought. Definitely on the lighter and more classic side, with restrained fruit and low key structure. This is drinking with balance and elegance now, but I'd have hoped for a bit more depth and power. The consistency with which this drank over 3 nights and gentle structure makes me think that, while this wine should drink well for at least several more years, there may not be much more development to be had. Good complement to both pork tenderloin and lasagna and on its own, but not really a standout with either. I might buy again, but I must admit, I've had so much success with BdMs in the $40-60 range, that it wouldn't necessarily be front of mind. 91-92
