  • Opaque, black color with brickish garnet edges. Comes across a little tired with some light stewed and prune notes with each fresh pour from the bottle, but opens up nicely with only a short bit of air each time, thankfully. Aromas of dark and dark red fruits, notably black cherry, damp earth, graphite, tobacco, eucalyptus, dry Indian spices, and a little floral. Almost has, like, Bordeaux vibes, oddly enough, but then with some more air by the end of the glass coming back closer to home. Medium body, acid, and finish, a luscious texture, and flavors of dark and dark red fruits, black tea, lemon, and orange peel. Flavors more BdM like.

This was my first experience with this bottling, and compared to the rossos, Birbas, BdMs, and BdM reservas I've had over several vintages, this comes across more muscular, dark, and brooding. My preference tends to veer more towards the other side stylistically and generally when pairing sangiovese with food, but this is good, and definitely a serious wine. Worked great with our homemade Bolognese tonight.

  • Initially austere and opened nicely after 45 minutes. Perfectly paired with wild boar at Erbaluce in Boston. Cherry and earth with a long balanced and sweet finish.

  • Pop and pour. Camphor and plum on the nose. On the palate, rich red cherry, plum, and earth, with moderate tannins and good acidity. This is obviously from a warm year, but I don't think I would have guessed it as a 2003. This is early in its drinking window, with several good years ahead of it. Very good value at under $50.

  • Deep red with maroon tints. Decanted for about an hour and opened up nicely. Nose of dark fruit, cigar box, mint, dried fruit and some raisins and leather. Flavors of black cherries and dark fruit with spices and earthy notes. Still has nice acidity, balanced by aged sweetness. Well integrated and balanced tannins. Long finish. Delicious!

  • The first night this wine was still a bit closed, but approachable. Dark fruit and firm tannins. By the 2nd night, it became a completely different wine. The nose turned reminiscent of an Amarone with raisins and dried currants. The sweetness followed through on the fore-palate with a still firm finish from the tannins. Very good with lots of depth!
