Dinner at Triple Crown (Chicago, IL): #05-17, 7% abv. Even at the Auslese level, Falkenstein still tastes like Falkenstein. Leaner with chewy minerality, but with that high tension lime and mineral thing going on. This I think has longer aging potential thanks to the sweetness, and while I appreciate the excitement here for drinking now, this is not really the type of riesling I'm really looking to cellar.

Jesus H Christ this is good. It was a bit muted when popped but after a few hours it has opened and blossomed. The nose is stunning - so much concentration that it almost has that brothy thing I get from top Austrian Smaragds - but along side that is crystal clear lime, slate, cumin and other spices. So crisp, so clear. The palate is heartbreaking - not heavy in any way - ethereal and transparent and delicious - lime, stones, slate, spices. The finish is long and pure and lip-smacking: a perfect continuation of the palate. Stunning in every way. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 18/20.
To be honest: I always enjoy Falkenstein wines but I never understood why they are generating this mad fervor among riesling lovers. I mean, they're good, but relative to other wines from the region, why these wines? Well, I drank the other bottles I had of this too early, This one, now at only 4 years old, was absolutely fantastic - a special wine. I think I get it now. Wispy and feathery in its elegance, both aromatically and on the palate. And this wasn't the case earlier, it's gained in elegance and harmony, which makes sense, but I didn't anticipate how much the wine would gain with just a few years. So delicate and also so pungent in its expression of stone fruit and acid and mineral. There is sweetness here but it is entirely balanced and it comes off as more of a textural element, if that makes any sense. Wow, I wish I'd waited on my other bottles.
