  • One of my favorite wines across the vintages and it was a pleasure, during the holidays at a dinner party, to introduce this bottle to friends who had never tried a classier barbera. Charmingly acidic, it paired well with a variety of foods, and showed lasting power from the first taste to the finish. Tobacco, rosemary and loads of cherry on a generally savory palate.

  • Dark purplish carmine in color with a thin watery edge. The nose is very aromatic with notes of fresh red fruits, with floral and herbal overtones, meat and a little woody spice. The palate is on the upper end of medium-bodied, very intense, powerful, well-structured and strikes me as somewhat spicy (most likely due to the copious amount of residual alcohol which stuck out a bit too much). The flavor profile include lots of good quality red fruits in the order of dark red and black cherries, ripe strawberries, pomegranates and red currants nicely integrated with wild flowers, grassy herbs, sappy twigs, spices, bloody beef, some wet which emerged after two hours of decanting but not much overt oak presence. The highlight of the tasting features a distinct flash of beautiful menthol-inflected earthenware-like minerality towards the deliciously savory finish. But the downside is definitely the alcoholic component that really does taste like the 15% abv. as indicated on the label which in my opinion is quite excessive to the point that it is annoying. Nonetheless, this is still a very intensely flavored and nuanced Barbera from a great Piedmont producer.

  • Incredible Barbera. Bursting with ripe red fruit and spices. Beautiful crunchy feeling with a refreshing acidity that cleans up. Great stuff.

  • 2018 Visit to Vietti (Castiglione Falletto): Served beside the La Crena. The non-old vines version of this wine (vines around 30 years old). I preferred the Scarrone over the La Crena. A more lifted, attractive bouquet of blackberries and other dark fruit, chalky minerals and a whisper of dark florals. Brighter fruit on palate than the La Crena. More ethereal and elegant but with a slightly wild berry element and more prominent acidity.
