  • Quite a serious, young wine. Gives a really strong dusty, cocoa (think hot chocolate powder) nose. Drank over 3 hours. It would be hard to distinguish between this and a burgundy in the palate.

    V sound if boring wine...

  • Medelintensiv brunröd färg. Doft och smak av viol, choklad och hallon. Sträv med frisk syra.

  • Opulent nose with ripe strawberries and same style on the palate. Rather warm finish and with chewy tannins.

  • Grapes sourced from the Vigna Borgese plot located in the Albesani vineyard in Neive. Fermented and macerated in stainless steel. Aged for 18 months in large oak botti and a further 6 months in bottles before release. 14,5% alcohol. Annual production 5,500 bottles.

Luminous, translucent and pretty intense pomegranate color that feels slightly more ruby-red than youthful purple-toned when comparing to the Mondino 2015 sitting in the neighboring glass. Somewhat restrained and slightly dry-ish nose that feels quite mineral and a bit smoky with vaguely dusty earthy tones and understated nuances of hot, sun-baked stones and fruitier characteristics of black cherries, some sour cherries, a little bit of dark berries and a hint of wizened plummy fruit. With air the nose becomes slightly more expressive, but also gains a slightly wild and funky undertone with a lifted hint of sweet nail polish VA. The wine is moderately full-bodied, ripe and pretty juicy on the palate with somewhat noticeable alcohol warmth and pure yet slightly reticent flavors of black cherries, some blackcurrants, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of stony minerality, a subtle hint of sappy, stemmy character and a sweeter touch of raspberry marmalade. The wine is pretty seriously structured with its moderately high acidity and ripe yet still quite grippy, ample tannins. The finish is ripe, rich and moderately grippy with piling-up tannins and juicy flavors of sweet black and red cherries, some plummy tones, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, a hint of stony minerality and a touch of savory old wood.

A lovely, juicy and tasty old-school Barbaresco with great structure and lots of fruit that feels slightly understated first, but grows slowly in intensity over time. Feels a bit more open for business than Vigna Borgese 2013 with slightly more sweeter-toned fruit and a bit less tightly-knit structure, but still this wine feels like it still needs years in a cellar before it starts to show its best. Might reach its peak faster than vintage 2013, but doesn't feel like it is going to be as long-lived. However, I suspect these wines will keep - if not develop - for decades. Sophisticated and delicious stuff, priced according to its quality at 45€.
