  • Starts out muted and understated. Then comes classic cabernet notes of cassis and mint on the nose.

A powerful wine with dusty tannins on the palate. Almost closing down on the blackberry fruit. Firm and structured

  • Nice. Bright fresh fruit leaning more red than dark. Good acidity, minerality, and tannins that are not overbearing (but there). Good stuff and attractive price.

  • Fresh and ripe with cassis, currant, eucalypt, peppery, earthy, meaty and vanilla aromas, all of which come through on the ripe, medium-full bodied palate. Tannins are soft and supple, while acids provide freshness. Very good length on the long, fresh finish.

  • I'm a big fan of this wine, but this vintage continues the recent trend towards a certain confectedness, as the sweet jelly fruit / fruit gummy note is quite pronounced. It almost seems like a mid-tier Chilean Cab, the sort produced for a broad international market. That said, it's still very good, if not quite at the 90 level of previous vintages I've tasted (e.g., '10, '13, '14). It's got that minty, smoky, minerally character that defines Coonawarra, plus blackcurrant and dark berries. The menthol really stands out on the nose, while the iron really stands out on the palate. There could be more acidity and more tannic structure, and it's surprising how soft this fairly young wine seems (again, you wonder if this has been intentionally made for easy accessibility and early international consumption), but there's just enough of each to offset the sweetness, more or less. I just hope the trend stops or reverses, because this used to be a lot better.
