  • Tasty CCGS from this producer on the NE side of the Chianti Classico region and from their Il Picchio vineyard (Woodpecker). This CC has a more prominent dark fruit and oak profile. Good structure and 5+ years of drinking window. oak leather tobacco smoke dark fruit

  • Opaque ruby-black, resembling inkberry. Serious nose, cooked black fruits. Black is a recurring descriptor, flashback to Nero d’Avola: tar, cooked blackberries, purple fruits, earthy flavors and buried tannin texture. Darker color may result from addition of the Colorino grape, which has colored flesh in addition to colored skin.

Faint baking spices, unsweetened dark chocolate, though not highly complex or floral. This is not aperitif material. Medium-plus acidity, not woody, neither rustic nor refined. Not obviously identifiable as Chianti, but well >90% Sangiovese, plus Canaiolo and Colorino.

Fruit emerges with a variety of Italian food, with remarkable body for 13.5% abv. Evident quality, and the bottle disappears quickly around the table. The Gran Selezione Chianti designation (broadly) still seems more of a freestyle showcase category than a pinnacle example of Chianti’s wine type, but that might be irrelevant to most.

  • Pure black cherry colour. Black cherry, tarragon, leather, black loamy earth, red plum, cherry wood shavings and a hint of cola on the medium nose. Soft and rather delicate mouthfeel, but then the tannins step out from behind the velvet curtains of fruit and grab you by the tongue. Darker fruit on the palate with black cherry, blue plum, more leather, licorice and stone dust flavours. Long, dry and tight finish. Very elevated and refined! Wow, such a lovely wine! This is the gorgeous Italian man in the perfectly tailored, slim silk suit of a wine! Bravissimo!

  • Dark plum, tar, dark cherry. Medium - body, medium + tannin, juicy finish with medium acid and a black tea, cassis profile. This is very interesting as it treads the line between the ripeness of the vintage and a poised, almost delicate sense of place. Can’t say I love it but intrigues me to try more Gran Seleziones to create a more informed opinion.
