  • Slow oxed for 6+ hours. Delicious dried flowers, crushed stone and herbs filled the glass. Not the typical nebbiolo but also reminiscent of a very good pinot noir. Mouth feeling was extremely balanced and ethereal. Gorgeous wine.

  • Bought yesterday at Borgogno in Barolo. Opened 4 hours with double decanting. In its drinking window with a little depth to the colour. A strong high-toned Nebbiolo nose but a full range of red fruit on the palate but little by way of mushrooms or salinity. Showing its year but showing that 2013 is a lovely year for classically styled wine. Better than expected despite high hopes. An over-achieving wine that is accessible to all.

  • This wine offered a real lesson in Barolo to me. My familiarity with Barolo is limited but I knew the range of expressions I might expect from this wine. When it was first opened and for the next hour, I would have put this wine in the "undrinkable" or "nearly undrinkable" category. The color was dilute, the weight was lean, and the flavors were objectionable (watery, vegetal, rotten) -- only the aromas were pleasant and prevented me from draining it down the kitchen sink. Thankfully we opened it probably 2 -3 hours before dinner. In that period of time, this wine transformed, slowly at first and then very quickly, into something of real beauty. I have enjoyed a decent number of older wines (this wasn't even 10 years) so I'm familiar with the change that can happen with the addition of oxygen but what happened here felt a bit more like alchemy. Everything shifted: the color darkened and deepened and ended upon looking not unlike the mid-1990s Pommard that was also on the table; the weight bulked up just enough so that it no longer had the mouthfeel of water; and the flavors were bright and pronounced, seemingly coming out of nowhere: red fruits, savory herbs, and lots of spicy (white pepper?) and feral (leather?) flavors made this into a truly pleasurable drinking experience. I learned my lesson here.

  • Here we go atruffling... (aka Piedmont... and Veneto); 11/16/2018-11/30/2018 (Alba, Guarene, Modena, Barolo, La Morra, Lake Garda .....): Very much the darker red fruits. A bit more tannic. This almost tastes a bit like darkness at this stage. Power and intensity and a bit woodsy. This is a nice wine, but really needs more time to come together. I preferred it to the Cannubi we had alongside.

  • Medium red, brick edge. Dark red fruit, anise. Full bodied, lots of fruit. Tannin is prominent on the finish. This has lots of stuffing to age.
