Accomasso Tasting plus some great Barolo Pirates (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany): *** all wines tasted blind *** Glass: Zwiesel 1872 Moment Pinot Clean, medium ruby color. Clean, classic Barolo nose, very fine and elegant. Not as elegant as the first two wines, but still very beautiful. Fruit is a bit artificial (strawberry) and it has the same herbaceous and green tomato notes as wine #2. Long. Very young, needs a lot of time to unfold. 92++

A Study of Vigna Rionda (Racines, NYC): Another gorgeous performance from the Ester Canale Vigna Rionda ‘14, showing a remarkably pretty display of of sweet dusty roses, with gorgeous ripe strawberry and cherry tones, giving way to crushed stone, and hints of tobacco. On the palate, I found silky textures, lifted by vibrant acids and minerals, as a display of ripe cherry, sweet herbs, inner florals and cool-toned minerals coasted across the senses. The finish was long, showing it’s youthful structure through fine tannins and resonating on fresh strawberries, infused by sweet floral tones. What a gorgeous wine and a vintage standout for certain.

(Berry’s Italian Tasting) :: Tight, unyielding but brooding with big complexity of stewed wild strawberries, cinnamon, rose petals, leather, tobacco leaf. On and on; tremendous. 95+

Iconic bottles: Barolo & Barbaresco Tasting (Maialino, NYC Lexington and 21st): The ‘14 Vigna Rionda was so densely packed and poised, a quality that I don’t often associate with the vintage. The bouquet was beautiful, both savory and spicy showing zesty tart cherries and cranberry with hints of spiced dried orange, crushed stone minerality, sweet rosy florals and savory botanicals. On the palate, I found soft textures, which were firmed up quickly by a mix of saline-minerality and brisk acidity, as notes of citrus-kissed strawberry, cedar, and earth tones emerged along with grippy mineral-laden tannin. The finish was long and structured with fine tannins saturating the senses while dried red berries, savory herbs and hints of cedar lingered. This was one of the most structured and backward 2014’s I’ve tasted, in need of a long slumber in the cellar, yet gorgeous.

Lovely purity of fruit, juicy, transparent, fresh and delicate on the nose - floral notes, minerality, spices. On the palate very grippy and tight. Less depth and complexity compared to the older vintages. This needs time of course but although it’s very good and promising I am not sure it is at quite the level of its older siblings. 90-91+(+)
