Decanted approx. 20 mins before serving. Lots of fine dark sediment. Really started to open after approx. 1hour Med- garnet colour with clearing at the rim. Overall yummy but a bit thin. Very interesting nose with mulberry, vegetal (tarragon? Or capsicum), blood, meat, wet stone, cedar, roasted red pepper. Mouth was similar but much less so. Complex and balanced but lacking in intensity and length

Tasted at home with friends at my annual DECADEnt dinner, where every wine served has its vintage ending in the same as the current year, so this year all vintages ending in “1”. This 1981 was the oldest wine served, this wine to accompany coq au vin. At 40 years old and not from one of the top chateau, I wasn't too sure what to expect. Opened 30 minutes before tasting, the wine was light in colour, with some browning at the edges, but not appearing especially old. The nose still showed plummy fruit, but no earthiness I might have expected. The palate was pleasant, but not exceptional. As an experience of an old vintage this wine worked well, but it wouldn't be worth buying other than for a special celebration or tasting.

Nice easy drinking wine, with just enough flavor remaining to make it worth drinking.
