This bottle showed an excess of oak, as noted on a prior bottle. My wife and I agree there definitely seems to be some significant bottle variation with this wine.

Typical Zinfandel notes and profile. Benefitted from about an hour in the glass, so I'd decant or give it a little more cellar time. Went very well with pizza as expected.

Very dark red/purple color with a slight garnet hue. PNP, drank two glasses over 2 hours. This takes about 30 minutes to unfold, showing red raspberry, black cherry, some black raspberry, damp soil and moss that gravitates to dry forest floor over time; pepper, spice. The palate is medium-full bodied, leaner in a good way, not so overt, more old school, ripe red berries after 30 minutes, black raspberry, gravel and mineral notes, pepper, and some vanilla emerges later. 91(+?)pts.

The overdone oak I found on a previous bottle seems to have been an anomaly. This shows minerally black and blue fruit, slight hint of alcohol on the nose, with blackberry, tart plums on the palate. Somewhat tannic finish. Best with food (ribs in this case). 89-90

This wine perplexes me. I loved early bottles, then found a couple that were so oaky that they were hard to drink. This one was beautiful, with well-integrated oak and a very perfumed, layered nose of primarily black fruits. Is there that much bottle variation? Or is it me? I haven't perceived this much variation in any other wine.
