This was a wine that I drank frequently about ten years ago. It was old school, well made, satisfying and inexpensive. This most recent bottle was, not surprisingly, much more developed than my last bottle years ago. The nose is especially complex and intriguing, with notes of leather and a dark, soy-like component. Very smooth mouthfeel, classic Chianti, some dried herbs. Excellent, old school, very satisfying. My first night in Chianti, poolside at Fietri, Gaiole in Chianti, with Greg.

SANGIOVESE 2001 (RISTORANTE SAN GIORS TORINO): Degustato alla cieca. Frutta cotta, un pò ossidata, polverosa, calda, ma molto balsamica. Terziarizzazione avanzata, funghi e foglie umide. In bocca l' acidità è ancora viva, il frutto cotto e la sensazione del rovere non riescono a oscurare un tannino amaro, polveroso e un pò asciugante. La sensazione è di un vino in fase calante, tanti funghi e sottobosco, e un senso di fattura grossolana.

Nose: smoked sausage, spice, tree bark and dark fruit
Palate: balanced acidity and minerality cuts through the meaty, smoked pork flavors. Mid palate and finish is dominated by an oaky dark fruit with herbal notes. Well balanced with a nice finish that stays with you.
This is at it's prime
