  • Luminous, moderately translucent black cherry color. Pure, vibrant and very classically styled nose with open aromas of fresh Pinosity, aromatic earthy tones, ripe red cherries, a little bit of attractively fine-tuned sweetness, hints of crunchy cranberries and a perfumed touch of violets. The wine is moderately full-bodied, somewhat chewy and quite fruit-forward on the palate with flavors of ripe black cherries, brambly dark berries, some juicy cranberries, a little bit of earthy character and a hint of sour cherry bitterness. Although the wine is very recognizable as a Pinot Noir, the wine feels it is more about ripe fruit than classic Pinosity. Nevertheless, the wine feels very harmonious and thoroughly enjoyable and its structure is well-balanced with the fruit, thanks to the moderately high acidity and moderately grippy medium-plus tannins. The finish is rich, spicy and relatively tightly-knit with intense flavors of ripe black cherries, somewhat tart dark plums, a little bit of tart cranberries, light peppery tones, a hint of earth and a touch of allspice. The tannins lend a moderately grippy touch to the aftertaste.

Compared to the other vintages of Cuvée Gérard (in a tasting of vintages 2007-2012) this vintage shone much brighter than the other vintages. Either the wines were somewhat predictable and fruity or tough and hollow, this was impressively structured, concentrated and still very youthful with a lot of ripe fruit and a firm structure to back it up. Although the wine has a sweeter edge to its fruit, the firm tannins and balancing bitterness keep the wine very harmonious from the entry to the finish. This might not be a remarkable, complex Pinot Noir that'll challenge any prestigious Cru Burgundy, but this offers serious pleasure for a lowly basic-level Bourgogne red. Shows some cellaring potential, probably peaking in 5 years or so. Recommended.
