  • Quite. It’s in a plush accessible style. More lush than what is typical but a fine tannic bead comes through on the finish adding a flinty complexity that is intriguing (and very much Pauillac). Don’t know the blend here but comes across as having a strong merlot component. Well balanced and handling the vintage well. Settling down nicely.

  • Pulled this illustrious Left Bank Super Second Bordeaux bottle out for Christmas dinner and thoroughly enjoyed with prime rib. Pouring into the decanter, one sees deep purple-black coloring. Given the youthfulness of this classic Pauillac (questioned even selecting after only 5 years) was prepared and gave it a good 2 hour decant ahead of pouring around the dinner table. First swirl in the mouth showed very nice notes of blackberries, black cherry currents, black fruits and chocolate. Upon a second sip, lead pencil shavings and tobacco notes are fully on display on the palate. It’s medium to full-bodied with good balance, ripe tannins, and a very nice finish for its youth. For a second of Chateau Pichon Comtesse, this wine has deep layers of ripe fruit, earth tones, tobacco, and should not be underestimated.  The 2018 Medoc region vintage was rated as a 97 on Wine Enthusiast’s official 2023 vintage chart and I would say that in another 5 years, that number is likely spot on for this Pauillac. It’s a good 95 now, will only get better with age. Drinking window is best from 2025-2040.

  • A couple years since my previous bottle. As expected, this has shed some of its baby fat and left a dense, mineral forward core. Fleshy blackcurrant and plums pulled taut by juicy acid, cedar, gravel, and iron, enrobed in Cashmere tannins. Cherry pit and pomegranate seed. One sees the resemblance to its big sister, especially after a couple hours of air. Gorgeous finish that goes on and on. Very primary and one could see this going for 20 years easily. 94-95. Traditionalists that poo-poo the 2018 vintage as overly ripe should try a bottle of this.

2018 Pichon Comtesse Réserve, Black current, spices, tobacco and coffee. It have some slightly bitter. 91
