  • Double-decanted and brought to Roman's for dinner. Classic aged Côte-Rôtie from very old vines, this had a feral bouquet with hallmark smoke, blood, game, tart olives and a lacy floral edge. It took a little while to stretch out on the palate, but once it did this was an umami bomb with scant amounts of tart red fruit still hanging around and a fair amount of firm, drying tannins clamping down on the finish. This was a little stern on its own but it shined with our meal (pappardelle with beef ragu on the one hand, rather rare steak with melted taleggio on the other). I might have enjoyed this more in its youth with more fruit, but I guess I'll never know.

  • La Tablee: The Glory of Cote Rotie (Clusel Roch) (Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria): This was much bigger than the '99 or the '01. Darker and more brooding. There's still some hints of gravel and hints of green. Needs a lot more time. Very young wine.

  • Et varmt år, men har klart seg fint. Meget flott kompleksitet, og på et meget fint sted nå. Lang og frisk. Kan bare sitte å sniffe og sniffe. Dør litt ut i finish, som hindrer at den er helt der opp,

  • While past it’s prime (should have opened it 5 years ago) this splendid Côte Rôtie did not disappoint. Very slow decanting was needed to separate years of deposits, and several hours were barely enough to allow the wine to open up and leave behind the initial sharpness. Perfect with the grilled lamb filet.

  • Heureka. Served blind (albeit after Monfertino et. al., everyone went for Vosne-Rosmanée as it often happens with the grand bouteilles of Côte-Rôtie; this is fully mature while still vibrant, and (if you know what it is) it is very typical of Grandes Places, combining elegance and power, presenting loads of pepper, bacon, tar and dark cherries. WOTN for most and that's saying something considering the line up in the night. With Lolli & Co. at Casa d'Antino, checking out the new chef.
