  This is fine for a $30 bottle of wine. I like it less now than I used to because I've gravitated even further into the traditional camp, and this is definitely a modern wine, albeit not as gloopy as many from this era. This is the reason I go for less ripe "off" vintages like '97 and '01 over '98, '00 and '05. In any case, this shows rich chocolate, plum, and vanilla notes on a medium frame with silky tannins. Drank well upon opening but started to deteriorate on day 2.

  Fine deep ruby, mahogany tinges. wonderful nose, perfume of spices and woody places, dried fruits. Plenty of plum and cherry and black fruits. Smoke, warm spices, earth. Good acidity, medium length. Mature enough and lovely. Good complexity and rather elegant.

  Decanted for 2 hours. Well-aged Bordeaux. Slight bricking. Spices and old wood and leather and mushrooms on the nose with a slight hint of fruit. Smells like an old library. Medium body. Still tannic with a decent acidic bite. Dried black cherries with vanilla/oak overtones. Decent finish. A wine that makes you think.

  This is my fifth bottle in the last year, as this is in a really good place right now. There is quite a bit of cedary oak on the nose, along with violets and plums. Quite aromatic, medium-bodied, medium-plus acidity, long slightly astringent finish, abundant but well integrated oak. A showy and lively wine, with my only minor complaint being that the oak is a bit more pronounced than I like. Still, great value and drinking well at 20 years.

  This is a such a good value in BDX, and I find I am really liking the '01 Right Bank wines, particularly compared to the much-hyped '00s. Cork and fill were perfect, and color is a deep purple-ruby with no signs of bricking. The nose is smokey and laden with minerals and black fruit aromas. Rich plum and cedar flavors on a sturdy frame, finishing with smooth tannins. Not the most cerebral or complex wine, but very well made. This particular bottle seemed much more primary than my other recent bottles. Delicious, and Croix de Gay continues to impress me.
