This is fine for a $30 bottle of wine. I like it less now than I used to because I've gravitated even further into the traditional camp, and this is definitely a modern wine, albeit not as gloopy as many from this era. This is the reason I go for less ripe "off" vintages like '97 and '01 over '98, '00 and '05. In any case, this shows rich chocolate, plum, and vanilla notes on a medium frame with silky tannins. Drank well upon opening but started to deteriorate on day 2.

Fine deep ruby, mahogany tinges. wonderful nose, perfume of spices and woody places, dried fruits. Plenty of plum and cherry and black fruits. Smoke, warm spices, earth. Good acidity, medium length. Mature enough and lovely. Good complexity and rather elegant.

Decanted for 2 hours. Well-aged Bordeaux. Slight bricking. Spices and old wood and leather and mushrooms on the nose with a slight hint of fruit. Smells like an old library. Medium body. Still tannic with a decent acidic bite. Dried black cherries with vanilla/oak overtones. Decent finish. A wine that makes you think.

This is my fifth bottle in the last year, as this is in a really good place right now. There is quite a bit of cedary oak on the nose, along with violets and plums. Quite aromatic, medium-bodied, medium-plus acidity, long slightly astringent finish, abundant but well integrated oak. A showy and lively wine, with my only minor complaint being that the oak is a bit more pronounced than I like. Still, great value and drinking well at 20 years.

This is a such a good value in BDX, and I find I am really liking the '01 Right Bank wines, particularly compared to the much-hyped '00s. Cork and fill were perfect, and color is a deep purple-ruby with no signs of bricking. The nose is smokey and laden with minerals and black fruit aromas. Rich plum and cedar flavors on a sturdy frame, finishing with smooth tannins. Not the most cerebral or complex wine, but very well made. This particular bottle seemed much more primary than my other recent bottles. Delicious, and Croix de Gay continues to impress me.

Cedar, tobacco, plum lavender and a bit of bell pepper on the nose, with mature oak stave notes. Medium to full bodied, leaning toward rustic and vegetal in its profile (in a good way), with cigar box and earthy terra cotta flavors. Finishes with dry tannins and pronounced vanilla oak. This bottle was quite primary and youthful, and I think another 5-10 years are needed for it to mature and shed some of its baby fat and to integrate the oak.

A lovely mature Pomerol, at peak drinking stage, and available for a song. Plum and earthy portobello mushroom flavors accented by herbes de Provence aromas. Well into its stage of secondary development with caressing dusty tannins.

This is a really lovely wine, still quite youthful and energetic, but with the resolved tannins of a wine that is reaching maturity. Gorgeous purple color with a garnet rim. The nose is brimming with plum and an herbal/sage note. Fruit forward entry with a smooth finish, and not much in the way of secondary characteristics yet, except for hints of stewed fruit/compote on the back end. I recently had the first bottle of a case of 2009's which were stunning, so I am beginning to think this is an estate I should watch, particularly considering their very fair pricing. Update: on day 2, this has acquired some additional secondary flavors (my dad used to call these "cobwebs") and a bit of tannin on the back end. This is drinking quite beautifully. Should hold and drink well for at least 5-10 years.

Fully mature Pomerol, with soft, silky textures, a medium body, and a floral, plummy, truffle essence. Popped and poured, this is drinking in its sweet spot. And because it is not really that well known, you should be able to score it for a fair price today.

First time tasted a La Croix de Gay, though very impressed with it's sister Chateau, La Fleur de Gay 2008. Still dark garnet in color, fairly young. Good nose. Sweet and smooth on entry with decent balance. Notes of plum, cherry, and cassis. Medium-bodied with good acidity level and slight heat at finish. Probably at its prime but should last for a few more years. Wonderful QPR if you can locate the wine. In memory of a friend TSW, last bottle we shared together before his tragic death. RIP. 91- 93 pts.

very nice pomerol. very dark in the glass, chocolate and cherries on the nose that follow through to a mid+ weight palate with lots of balanced minerality. Lots of sweet fruit and fine tannin. Good now, but will get better in 2-3 years. Started light and acidic on the 1st glass, but put on a lot of weight and really hit its stride about 3 hours in.

Young still for this wine. Amazing nose, rich and dark yet sweet. Dark in the glass.Heavy on the palate. Dark chocolate covered black cherries, lavender, graphite, vine or stem, black plum, big gravel on the finish. Not oaky, the acidity is still very strong in this wine but in a pleasant way. Very delicious wine, still has years ahead of it, wouldn't open another for a few years. The wife says"absolutely delicious".

Picking up weight and notes of truffles, chocolate, blue fruits, earth, tabacco and complexity on the finish. It appears to be shut down but sems to be getting better than the last bottle we opened.

Delicious ripe ready Pomerol. Cassis and cherry integrated with cedarwood. More cherry on the long silky smooth finish. Some vegetal / herbal notes towards the end but we cannot place it. Excellent

Plum-coloured. Delicious, sweet, vanilla-spice nose, a little cassis. Similar taste; lush fruit initially, lightly tannic, almost floral midpalate, delicious oak, and a dry finish. This is my kind of red wine, especially the nose. I have a feeling that it won't stand long-term cellaring - there's just not enough fruit to carry it - but it is really lovely now. Crying out for food. [Majestic, £25]

2001 Bordeaux Horizontal Tasting (Wetzlar): #9 La Croix De Gay, Pomerol The nose smelled slightly oxidized. The palate was different. Sour cherries and olives and smoke. This is clearly a good wine, but not really my style. If this is a typical Pomerol, I don’t like Petrus ;-) Thank god. 89 pt. (Group’s 2nd rank, my 4th)
