  • Opened at the Lobster Bar at the Island Shangri-La in HK. P&P and slowly enjoyed over dinner.

Wow - this was an even better bottle than the one I had at the Shang a week before. Prime Soldera, and for my tastes, at the perfect spot right now balancing freshness and purity of sweet seductive fruit alongside having everything balanced and mellowed out on the palate. As per my previous note, you can feel the 14% alcohol here, but it's so well integrated that it just adds a touch of pleasant heat and spice.

Honestly, it's just a shame that I'm unsure if I will ever get another chance to try this. With only around 2,000 bottles produced due to the vandalism on the estate, this is a very rare wine. You're lucky if you have this in your cellar - save it for a special occasion but don't hesitate to drink up either in my opinion as this is at peak.

An absolute pleasure to drink this and share with M, who brought along a great wine as well. Also, welcome home C!

  • Opened at Petrus in HK. P&P but enjoyed slowly over a long lunch.

Absolutely gorgeous Soldera, entirely integrated and at peak for my tastes. After a little bit of air, the bouquet opened up to reveal what makes you fall in love with this wine: a sweet, seductive nose of red fruits. Fresh cherries, strawberries and roses are wafting at you from the glass, drawing you in for more. Could smell this for days, let alone drink it.

On the palate, there is a lot of structure here, but it's lifted and elegant and goes down very easily. Compared to some other vintages, you can tell that this has slightly more alcohol (14% as opposed to the more usual 13.5%) and this adds a tinge of heat, but isn't unpleasant at all. Goes down super smoothly and is just a pleasure to drink.

A rare wine, given the tragic vandalism on the estate, but if you are lucky enough to have these, I wouldn't hesitate to drink up on a special occasion. Probably 95+, maybe on another day it would edge up to 96 for me. Would seek out to revisit, as this is prime Soldera for me right now.

  • I first tried this 4 years ago, and it’s just as profound. Bright ruby in the glass. With 16 years, this has evolved more into red fruits and crushed strawberrries. Still a lot of barnyard. Elegant mouthfeel and long finish. So balanced for a warm climate and 14% abv. A wonderful wine.

  • Soldera night
1998 tawny aged wine with a lovely bees wax nose and some licorice. Just perfectly resolved tannins and more classic a wine than complex. Shorter on the palate as the night wore on (93 points)

2003 more subtle nose a little sois bois, great structure and lots of fruit my favorite wine between the 98 and the 04 (94 points)

2004 quite closed on both nose and palate, probably may be in a slight shut down phase, good structure. My least favorite wine of the night (92 points)

2007 decanted, amazing rose from the beginning. Very approachable with roses that evolved into pineapples later on into the evening. Just so crazy concentrated fruit and intense flavors that went on and on. My WOTN (95 points)

2009 decanted, a floral sensual nose! Just so beautiful and approachable. Perhaps even more structure than the 07 but not quite as ready. Just so much potential but likely could do with more cellar time. Try in 3-5 years (94+ points)

  • Every now and again, a wine takes you completely by surprise and knocks you off your feet; this was one of those occasions. Served blind. Clear in the glass. Ruby. A mind blowing nose. My tasting notes reading "This nose. Wow. Incredible!". Blackcurrents, blackberries and barnyard. I could smell and smell and smell this wine all night long. Medium acidity with medium to high tannins. Layered. Balanced. Ready but will improve. It came across as a hot vintage, but the alcohol was we hidden.

Served blind by TL, with ST and DrK.
