  • This winery is based out of the southern end of the Santa Cruz mountains, where the vineyard is situated 1000 feet above Monterey Bay. The location enjoys long hours of temperate sunshine during the critical growing season, and the bay provides the vineyard with cooling fog in the evening, which allows for a longer growing season. This combination of factors makes for quite a nice wine!

Visiting the tasting room in Carmel Valley was interesting: during COVID-19 all tastings were outdoors as per the law -- but they lacked a patio, so the tasting was quite literally in the parking lot. Somewhat of an adventure, I never expected to be served wine this good in a parking lot! The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the wines were great so it made for an unusual but fun experience.

Light ruby in color, this wine is quite aromatic and sings forth with a nose full of ripe red fruits that is accompanied by a certain smokiness, star anise and a hint of cedar. Upon sipping one is met with a light bodied wine with low tannins and rather strong acidity. Despite the acidity, though, the body still retains an overall supple texture that is quite pleasant. The attack is initially soft, but the flavors gradually unfurl with plenty of ripe red cherry, black cherry and black raspberry, from which pomegranate later emerges in the midpalate. There is also some underlying star anise and oaky vanilla, which is a nice touch to balance the fruitiness. The finish is quite long and dominated by a mix of said red cherry and pomegranate.

This is a solid wine! Certainly quite flavorful and with a pleasant texture. I found it went very well with smoked gouda, so I think I'll pick up another bottle!

  • Windy Oaks signature wine, primarily from 1.5 acre Bay Block of original 3-acre vineyard. Classic Burgundian flavors with elegance, finesse and layering in the Chambolle-Musigny style. Available only to WG members and/or at the tasting room.

Very transparent light-to-medium black-red; explosive nose of black pepper, dried sage and potpourri; tense and finely expressive on the palate; pretty at mid-palate, warm toward the finish; very attractive and fine; aged 24 months, 65% new French oak, 554 cases
