1993 survey, or filling a hole with Chave (Chicago, IL): The Corton terroir really shows next to the Clos St. Jacques. This is a burly, broad-shouldered wine, with more black fruit and leathery tannins on the palate. Still very youthful, with delicate acidity to give shape to the structure. A long life ahead for this bottle.

Lovely color, decent concentration of amber bronze through candy apple red.
Nose is gentle, slightly reticent though there is a sweet edge to the very pure and refined aromas of stone, blackberry, sage, and candied apricot/orange with a grace note of slightly savory spices. Vibrant in the mouth, tense, still with tannins and a strong stone aspect that lends energy to the long finish. There's a lovely hint of candied orange to the finish that leads to a slightly floral and red cherry toned finale. Lovely, easy to drink, yet delicate though that cherry fruit gains prominence with every sip. There’s still some tannin lending grip on the palate. Just a terrific spot for this and a really compelling, if subtle example.

(Not a) birthday dinner (Hinsdale, IL): Decanted into an Acqua Panna bottle. Unfortunately, stewy and likely heat-damaged.
