I appreciate that DuMol takes great care to not manipulate the Syrah grape to ensure the varietal remains true to itself. While this cannot be confused for anything other than a new world Syrah because of the fruit concentration, it is has a very primary Hermitage like character to it. Everything is in balance and it doesn’t taste like a syrupy mess like many California Syrahs. I doubt this will evolve much more from where it is today. Drink in the next 5 years. I would decant it for 30-60 minutes to allow it to unfold.

Consumed this bottle in three different settings and different dates thanks to my Coravin. This is an easy drinking Russian River Syrah that is not overly complex. True to its Syrah varietal expression both in nose and finish. Well balanced and the fruit is in balance and not extracted. I would drink this in the next 5 years.

Also served briefly by the glass from a single-bottle brought on that same flight from Miami. It is a giant wine, really powerful at this precise moment and yet, if we leave it sleeping 5 years in the cellar, its emphatic tannins could integrate very well with the notes of ripe black fruit, roasted meat and cocoa essence on the nose. In the mouth you have to add an energetic acidity and also a deep minerality. A small find not so rare nowadays in terms of Rhone varietals but made in California at an absurd price for what it really is. Preview of another American syrah tasting coming up.

Decanted for an hour then finished five days later...this will go the distance. Blueberries, violets, purple sage, broiled steak and rocky terrain. The finish is long, with this middle that has grip and roundness. Fibrous tannins, and full body - this waivers from decadence to refinement. Drink 2022 - 2032.
