  • I bought a case of Ch. d'Escurac about 20 years ago and this is the last of the batch. Unlike some recent reviewers who judged it to be over the hill, I found this, my last, bottle to be in perfect condition. It had been in a cool cellar for all this time. Lots of sediment when I decanted, not much nose, but excellent color. After about one hour, we enjoyed the wine with dinner, including a cheese course. The initial impression was of very well integrated red and orange fruits, not very sweet, but lots of interesting spices, especially cinnamon and allspice, along with rosemary. With the Stilton at the end of the meal, all these flavors were intensified, and the taste went on for about a full minute. Quite good for a twenty-plus year old wine that originally cost me $12. 93.

  • 13% alcohol. Cork of average quality; a good few tartrate deposits but little wine penetration (about 5mm). Decanted an hour ahead. Dark colour with very little sign of ageing.
Pleasant fruity nose, on the vivacious and brambly side. The mouth is similar, structured by noticeable acidity rather than by tannins (although there are some left). No noticeable oak. A rather strict Médoc after all these years; nothing charming about it, but very correct. Probably not a repeat purchase as the ratio of pleasure to time in the cellar is rather low. Of course the structure will loosen further with extra time, but by then the little fruit that is left will have dried out completely, I would think.

  • almost opaque black cherry colour, still quite youthful, nose very typical St Estephe / N Haut Medoc, powerful rich and meaty with hints of the green vegetal character I associate with the northern communes, in this case well masked by the fruit, good rich fruit on the palate, slight hardness at the finish, just a bit rustic, the missing finesse and “class” is what still relegates this to a very good cru bourgeois but not more, no rush to drink though good now

  • Weekly tasting group RWP #258: Bordeaux 2000 (@ VD): The bouquet is still a bit locked, but shows dark fruits and vanilla. On the palate dark berries, licorice, bell pepper, good acidity and slightly drying tannin. Overall a juicy and full bodied wine which lacks some finesse, but is certainly more than ok.
