Rosemary’s redux, bottle # 0514: One can easily read a newspaper through a light strawberry colored glass of this wine. The nose is reminiscent of Joe Davis’s Pinots at Morgan (I add that this is the only comparative equivalence) in the early 1990s, this particular wine being of a clean, Burgundian, Savigny-Les-Beaune, village wine level, particularly a a southern hillside exposure, light bodied and less hearty than the northern hillsides, with a scent of calcaire flintiness, and delicate, yet sweetly ripe aromas of strawberry. The mouthfeel is of a medium light viscosity, with a scant expression of almost implied fruit on the palate (and without the benefit of an accompanying meal), the primary presence of fruit is that of grape skins on the finish. My wife’s rating of 89 is, I feel generous, but compromise is always advantageous when drinking wine with one’s spouse. The wine’s fruit does flesh out a bit with the meal, but there is a metallic taste impression that is a minor disappointing detractor.

Bottle # 1045. Translucent red cherry color suggesting moderate, if that, extraction. Very reticent nose of faint dried cherries and powdered strawberry. Light, vapid mouthfeel, with surprisingly lip drying tannins and acidity, that are more present than the almost nonexistent, AWOL (albeit sweet and pretty on the tongue) fruit. There is no mid palate or finish on this wine. This is a very disappointing, showing from a vineyard that, under the guidance of past winemakers, has produced polished and complex Burgundian style Pinot Noir. If I were blind tasting this wine, I would have been reminded of a $12.00-$17.00 non-specifically vineyard sourced California (even with a “California” moniker) regional attempt, or a low level Oregon offering. To think the winery charged $90.00 a bottle is beyond comprehension. “The Emperor’s New Clothes” springs to mind. The 2017 vineyard designated Pinot Noir offerings from this producer were much better wines (especially from the Stone Corral vineyard), which were welcome after a disappointing 2016 vintage showing. My wife rated this wine at 88 points, as she stated “It’s drinkable.” For this price point, there should be much more to offer, especially considering the vintage characteristics. We concluded our wine club membership after this vintage. Robert Parker, giving this wine a 94+ rating, used superlatives, along with more generous pronouncements, such as “pale, light to medium, floral nuance, a gentle frame, classic, bright freshness, and potpourri note.” I enjoyed the 2018 Estate Pinot Noir much more, and the Rincon vineyard Pinot Noir was excellent.

Grippy and short finish. Doesn’t seem en par with prior years
