Classicism of earth with properly balanced and restrained Calistoga ripeness. Drinking beautifully now but will cruise for another 10-15 years on its side.
There’s a reason why Spottswoode is one of the established Napa greats. Admittedly I often overlook it because it is relatively available. Not making that mistake anymore.

Third time tasting this vintage. Prior tasting notes are from 2015 and 2018 and I clearly was not as much of a fan then as I am now of the 2005 vintage bottling of Spottswoode. That said, this wine has finally come of age and is drinking so beautifully now. Decanted for 1 hour. This tasting suggests to me not to drink Spottswoode too young. Patience is rewarded.
Another surprise star of the tasting. The red cherry, strawberry preserve, plum and sandalwood notes were ravishing on this wine. The structure was more reserved that other vintages around it, and the freshness was remarkable. This is drinking fabulously now.

Cork disintegrated, but I was able to salvage. Decanted approx 2 hours. Opened up quite a bit to reveal fruit, but also cocoa, menthol, and fine tannins. Quite dry, but wonderful.

Just outstanding. Decanted from sediment.

2005 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Estate. Mid-dark garnet, brick edges, viscous (14.1 alc.); red fruit, raspberries, light mint, herbaceous, hint of wood; mid acids; mid tannins; balanced; long semi-tight Cabernet finish; some life left; nice style. 17-17.5 UC Davis scale, 92-93 other scales.
