  • In a sweet spot right now. Cherries, spices, liquorice, dried cranberries, and tar. Did not decant this bottle as it didn't seemed to be needed upon opening it. It was incredible fragrant from the get go. Dusty tannins. Good length.
Drink now and the next 8 years.

  • A private dinner (Restaurant Metro, Amsterdam, NL): Not decanted. Showing very well today, youthful and energetic but open for business, with marvellous Amarena cherry fruit and orange zest, spices and a hint of liquorice; clear and bright style, excellent balance and freshness, elegant weight (13.5% ABV) and structure with a lovely charge of sandy tannins, outstanding length. Classic Monforte Barolo. Bravo.

  • Pine needles, juniper berries, plastic, cooked red fruits - red cherries, raspberries, cranberries, cinnamon and allspice. The fruits are ALMOST stewed, but too young to show that condition on the nose. A little reductive. Medium + intensity of aromas. It smells "wintery" and "outdoorsy". There are hints of VA and reductivity on this, but both add to this rather than detract. It smells older than it is, in a good way. I think it's really going to be interesting in a couple of years when it's in its drinking window.

But how does it taste? Much more like its age, in fact. I get mostly the red fruits, and they are more ripe than cooked or over ripe. A little bit of the cinnamon and allspice. In time, I believe the flavors will be more consistent with the aromas. Medium intensity of flavors at this point in time.

Medium + body with medium + acid and medium + lingering tannins. Developing. Hold for 2-5 more years but it could go up to 10. This wine is very interesting and I am excited to see where it goes.

  • Medium bright red garnet in color. Forward, fragrant & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of red cherries, strawberries & plums with overtones of floral notes of violets & roses & earthy/dusty, minerals, spices, some tar notes, mint, anise & dried herbs. Medium bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of red cherries, strawberries & tart cranberries with dried herbs, mint, anise, minerals & spices. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing but should develop further with additional aging. A classic old school Barolo.

  • Walkaround tasting. Floral start with red cherry, which continues onto the palate. Elegant but lighter styled, I would hope more weight emerges with cellar time. 88=89 points today.
