  • Veltliner Wende (Detroit): Immediately I notice a green, lemony slap and stone cut in the aromatic entry. From that point it develops richer, sunned-earth tones, lavender, sandalwood, and flint. The first drink is attenuated and fine. For all its direct action, there is plenty of room for internal contrast and articulation—translucent and appetizing bitterness; rose petal saline; purslane; corn sprout; ceramic lemon; grip.

Hiedler's 2020 GV Löss is a categorical anomaly, in that it seems to have required a third year in bottle to digest its own leesy esters. With a view to the inevitable collapse of freshness and fruit, some vigilance may be warranted, but I'm not holding my breath. Maybe I can still find another bottle to drink next year.
    ________
tilling this tricycle of veltliner, coming around to this for the third or fourth encounter ... it's amazing.
    ________
24 hours later it's replete with marks of oxidation—still very drinkable. 88.

  • Absolutely delicious. A steal.

  • A classic, forthcoming expression of this variety. It has a raunchy, daring wrapper of earth and fermenter-solids that gives abundant and piercing lemons and limes a frame to state their case. Wilting, drenched willow branches drag across yellow apple, matcha, and fig. It reminds me a little of Strekov's Veltin without the grandiose risk. Exceptional material here. Licentious production. Use serving temp to throttle the challenge it presents—ie serve cold until it finds an audience. Very good 24 hours later, too.

  • A tasty and versatile GV with nice levels of extract and some real starchy midpalate presence. Not at the "tropical" end of the spectrum, but rather this rides a balance between some savory (brothy) GV notes and apple/pear/honey. Good QPR, although the 2020 Aichenberg "Premium" is almost as good at almost half (!) the price.

  • Prototypical Grüner Veltliner, with crisp pear and cress, a touch of mid-palate richness that carries through the finish, and a lot of sustain for $20. I have not bought much entry level Grüner over the last several years, and this bottle reminds me that there is great value in the category.
