Heater week; 3/8/2024-3/17/2024 (Chicago, IL): Much better than the 2005, which was alcoholic and over the top. This is lighter, with more acid, more red fruit, and on the whole far more balanced. No dark fruit here.

This wine is singing beautifully right now. A flowery oaky and funky bouquet. Some candied bacon hints as well. Concentrated fruit screams from the bottle. Taste is sweet, bold and finish is extreme. Some spice in the aftertaste. This is a special bottle.

Less a note and more observations based on this bottle: Cayuse can age and evolve more than I have given them credited for in the past. This bottle still had a nod to the old aka heavy funk and wet animal fur. But see the point above and know that those traits were still present but wonderfully integrated along with dark cherry and iron notes that leave the end impression of a wonderfully silky and refined Syrah. Love Cayuse, but I would never call them as a vesatile food pairing partner. But we had this at the high end Peruvian Andina in PDX, and I don't know if it was the Aja Amarillo paste, but the exotic nature of the food was a perfect wine for this wine.

Every bit as good as our last bottle, this has aged well. Cannot see it improving so drink whenever the spirit moves. Most of the typical funk has drifted away so what we are left with is a beautiful rich and round syrah from the master.
