  • Vosne-Romanee Grand Crus for Michael and Peter's Birthdays 2015 (Gattopardo Restaurant, Tras Street, Singapore): Similar to the last bottle I had, which was good, but showed a certain rustic hardness on the finish that reflected the deficiencies of terroir and the vintage. The nose had a lot of character to it, with meaty, earthy notes ringed by wafts of perfumy spice and powdered Chinese herb and a clear core of dark cherry aromas. The palate showed a lovely clarity on attack, with a dark fruited expression that showed both depth and purity as it spreads into and across the midpalate. I thought this was a very broad-shouldered wine at that point, with lots a nice strength and breadth to it. However, it then mushed up a little in terms of structure and fullness, losing some definition as the finish dropped off, leaving a light linger of fruit floating over a backbone of dried powdery herb and spicy, brambly twigs. Still though, this was quite pleasurable. Not perfect, but a very decent Echezeaux nonetheless. On present evidence, I am not sure whether the fruit will outlast the structure of the wine or vice versa.

  • Rich black fruited nose, poopy; dark cherry, thick and chewy palate.

  • Another 98. I thought minty and lacking in acid.

  • Vosne Night (Tonny Restaurant, Geylang Lor 3, Singapore): Very nice. This had a lovely nose, very lush and flowery, with shades of earth and meat and sweet red fruit, all enlivened by little touch of sweet spice and flower petals - a really pretty bouquet for an Echezeaux. It was very pleasant on the palate too, with a fleshy attack of sweet red berry fruit touched with spice, and then gentle bits of earth and herb and a little dirft of those flowery notes coming along on the midpalate. A nice balance and fine tannins gave the wine a rather feminine feel, much in keeping with its flavour profile. The finish just a touch on the shorter, more austere side, with a little hint of drying herb – incidentally, being just about the only hint of the 1998 vintage on the wine. Otherwise, this was youthful, bright and delicious. Drinking decently well, if still rather youthfully. I am not all that sure how much upside there is to the wine though. That austere 1998 backbone may well show up more and more as the bright, perfumy character of the wine mellows.

  • this showed surprisingly well today - just one of these Burg moment where you catch a bottle at the right time, about 1 hours after opening. Great nose, well structured palate and good length. Stewed red fruit.
